Overview

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) double degree course will prepare you for a career as a skilled, critical and effective teacher and educator in the primary or secondary sector. Participants build a strong base for decision making in relation to their practice and establish themselves as future educational leaders in a global workforce. You will build a high level of expertise in one of two specialisations:

  • Primary education
  • Secondary education

The course will prepare you for teaching in an increasingly diverse, complex and changing world. You will engage with contemporary ideas and practices and learn how to foster the learning of children and young people with varied needs. This will enable you to develop your students’ creative, intellectual, physical, personal and social capabilities.

While learning to navigate the complex nature of teaching, you will develop the specific professional knowledge and teaching skills needed to engage students of various ages and developmental stages with particular school subjects. Depending upon your specialisation, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to teach in learning areas such as the arts and music, English, mathematics, humanities, physical education, health and wellbeing, science, and digital technologies. Professional experience offered throughout the course in urban, rural, remote or international locations and education settings, will build your knowledge of teaching and learning. As a result, you will become a thoughtful, effective and inclusive educator, able to design learning experiences that ensure that your future students have the right balance of challenge and support.

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) prepares you for the global workforce. You will have a strong foundation for decision making about your practice and you will be in a position to establish yourself as an educational leader of the future.

Share your artistic passion and creativity with children and young people in this double degree course combining fine art with education.

The course is available for either primary or secondary school teaching. Secondary education students will prepare as specialist teachers of art, while primary education students will be prepared to teach across the school curriculum with specialist expertise in either, English and literacy, or mathematics and numeracy, as well as fine art.

Fine art will prepare you for a career as a contemporary professional artist and will provide you with adaptable creative skills that open up a variety of career options in allied creative and professional fields. You can take an interdisciplinary approach and explore a range of media and techniques, across digital technologies, drawing, glass, installation, jewellery, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, sound and video, or you can practice and focus on a single medium.

Education study complements this with the knowledge and skills of how young people learn and are taught both generally and within fine art. Taken together they open up a wide range of career opportunities.

Education

The course develops through the five themes. The nature and proportion of units required among these themes will differ depending upon your specialisation and discipline studies. In this double degree you will complete:

Part A. Core studies

These studies include essential units that are part of every specialisation. These units are designed to ground you in evidence-based practices, preparing you to navigate diverse classroom environments and enhance student learning effectively. A key focus is developing your knowledge and skills to choose strategies that support students to learn, retain, and apply knowledge effectively.

You will explore effective teaching practices, such as sequencing for learning, modelling expected outcomes, assessing and reporting student progress, and providing constructive feedback to support student growth. Classroom management is another major component where you will learn to create structured, supportive environments using clear rules, routines, and high expectations. You will also develop skills to build positive relationships with students, engaging them actively in their learning journey. Inclusivity is embedded throughout the units and you will gain foundational knowledge of First Nations cultures and perspectives, along with other enabling factors that promote cultural responsiveness and support for diverse learners. These units will equip you to become an adaptable, culturally aware, and skilled teacher, ready to apply evidence-based practices for impactful and inclusive teaching and learning.

Part B. Education studies

These units cover essential aspects of learning to teach and are tailored to each specialisation to prepare you appropriately to enter the profession in your chosen sector (primary or secondary). These studies include an examination of the learning and teaching relationship, child and/or adolescent development, alongside classroom culture and practice. You will build your professional skills, knowledge and understanding of teaching through a process of personal inquiry into effective teaching practices, informed by current research. These units will challenge you to consider global and local influences on education as well as the effective and innovative incorporation of emerging technologies to ensure the relevance of your teaching. You will build a deep understanding of learners, families, schools and communities. Societal trends are explored as well as how to effectively engage local communities, parents and carers.

Part C. Curriculum studies

With a focus on the Victorian Curriculum, these units will provide you with the content-specific knowledge pedagogies, covering Foundation–10 curriculum, as well as specific pedagogy appropriate for teaching VCE in a particular discipline(s). You will develop the understanding and skills needed to become a skilled, innovative and effective educator who is able to draw on a repertoire of strategies to suit particular students, educational contexts and learning outcomes. You will learn how to design, plan and implement engaging learning experiences to meet diverse learners' needs. You will develop your knowledge and skills in key learning areas relevant to the educational level of your specialisation, deepening your understanding of teaching and learning, assessment strategies, theories and practices related to the subjects you will be teaching.

If you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Education double degree course, you will be prepared to teach in two secondary teaching areas. You will also be required to successfully complete a unit that develops skills in teaching literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, ensuring you have the skills and expertise to share in the responsibility of educating literate and numerate learners.

Part D. Discipline studies

These studies are designed to develop your content knowledge in the key learning areas that you will be teaching in schools or other education settings. These units are offered as integrated curriculum/discipline studies in the primary specialisation, and as a standalone discipline studies sequence in the secondary specialisation; these units will provide you with a focused sequence of study that will deepen and advance your knowledge in your teaching specialist areas.

Part E. Professional experience

Integral to the course, the professional experience opportunities have been designed as a developmental learning sequence that you will engage with at every stage of your course. This component is an opportunity for you to build connections between the themed unit content and apply these in a professional context. You will operate within a particular social and legislative environment unique to your placement setting, and interact with sector professionals as you work collaboratively with them whilst on placement. An opportunity to further explore these professional elements is facilitated through the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) unit.

Fine Art

The course is structured in five parts and develops through theme studies in history and theory, drawing, and fine art knowledge and practice.

In the fine art specialisations, these will come together during the final two studio units in the third year of the course and final projects will be exhibited in the graduand exhibition. In this double degree you will complete:

Part A. Critical contexts

These studies will equip you with the skills necessary to research fine arts issues and provide the research methods relevant to your studio or workshop practice. They will enable you to contextualise your own practice and communicate ideas and strategies. Through the prism of history, as well as reference to bodies of knowledge relevant to cultural production, you will begin to situate the place of art in society.

Part B. Disciplinary practices

The studies will assist you to develop the perceptual, practical and intellectual skills required by art, design and architecture students in the discipline of drawing. This will introduce you to occupational health, safety and environmental training particularly within the context of studying art, design and architecture.

Part C. Studio practice or Applied disciplinary practices

Through this component of the course you will develop key skills and concepts particular to your fine art specialisation. Through lectures and seminars, studios or practice driven workshops, you will develop the capacity for independent cultural production within fine art and related fields. Interdisciplinary skills and practices will be explored in conjunction with critical thinking. If you are specialising in art history and curating you will have the opportunity to interact with topics and students from a range of relevant fields in the arts.

Part D. Discipline electives

These elective studies provide you with the opportunity to deepen and broaden your knowledge and practice through the selection of electives in Fine Art. In these studies you can choose to complete an internship or undertake an unit abroad or select units in your discipline that are of interest.
