Overview
Complex urban challenges require design, development and planning professionals who are skilled, creative and entrepreneurial
The Urban Design and Development course at Monash Indonesia focuses on complex urban challenges involving climate change, environmental sustainability, social equality and technological transformations. It provides students with an opportunity to cultivate informed visions, practical projects, and strategic proposals that address such challenges in Indonesia and other parts of the rapidly urbanising world.
Real world projects
The course is powered by a transdisciplinary ethos and multisectoral outlook that keeps the real world firmly in view.
The curriculum is centred around experimental studio projects integrating environmental sciences, social sciences, data analytics, and humanities areas with design and development practices. The studios address pressing global, regional and national issues, and are coordinated with specialised lecture and seminar-based units on topics such as ecology, urban theory, smart cities, technology, governance, policy and regulation.
This approach is anchored in the everyday life and empirical realities of the city of Jakarta itself, and the towns, and extended settlement systems that surround it. The course works actively with governmental, industry, and civil society stakeholders to generate innovative projects that are tailored to local living environments.
Flexible study options
The Graduate Diploma of Urban Design and Development may be taken flexibly in full-time or part-time durations, with units delivered in hybrid, online and on-campus modes.
On completion of the Graduate Diploma of Urban Design and Development, you may progress to the Master of Urban Design and Development.
As a graduate of the Master of Urban Design and Development, you will be equipped with the conceptual, creative and technical skills to develop integrative solutions to the complex urban challenges resulting from climate change, environmental degradation and development inequalities.
Multidisciplinary participants
The course welcomes applicants with strong undergraduate and/or equivalent industry experience in relevant backgrounds such as architecture, urban design, urban and community development, urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental science, geography, and civil engineering.
Graduates will be equipped for employment in government departments, public enterprises, private development companies, and civil society organisations.
Course structure
Part A. Foundation24 credit points
Part B. Exploration24 credit points
The handbook's description of this structure
The course comprises studios, undertaken in project mode and in collaboration with local government agencies, and supporting study units that provide knowledge of urban planning and design contexts, regulations and techniques, including mapping tools, AI and data analytics.
The Graduate Diploma is structured in two parts: Part A. Foundation (24 points), and Part B. Exploration (24 points).
Part A. Foundation
Foundation builds essential creative and practical design skills. The studio-based units establish core design principles and practices, while the complementary theory units introduce key disciplinary frameworks. One focuses on the complex social and structural elements of urban life, and another examines ecological considerations within urban settings. Together, these provide critical thinking skills and contextual awareness, preparing students to design effectively within diverse social and environmental contexts.
Part B. Exploration
Exploration focuses on climate sustainability, resilience, and technological transformation. The studios tackle specific issues such as urban density and congestion, tropical urban environments, the integration of smart technologies, and active mobility. These studio units are supported by two theory units: smart city technologies and governance and development.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

Other information
Complex urban challenges require design, development and planning professionals who are skilled, creative and entrepreneurial.
The Urban Design course at Monash Indonesia equips you with the expertise to shape and contribute to the future of urban life, grounded in an ethos of evidence-informed creativity and augmented through an interwoven curriculum.
Future Urban Life
As urbanisation transforms our world, this degree explores how ‘urban life’ permeates cities and beyond, transforming neighbourhoods, towns and regions. It fosters design that addresses the impacts of - climate change, resource depletion, uneven development - and helps improve the quality of life for diverse human and non-human communities.
You will design across multiple scales and typologies: inclusive neighbourhoods, vertical innovation hubs, 15-minute towns, cyber-physical places, historic quarters, smart mobility networks, amphibious waterfronts, sponge cities, and agropolitan bioregions.
Evidence-Informed Creativity
The degree is grounded in an ethos of evidence-informed creativity, combining rigorous analysis, imagination and real-world engagement.
This ethos prepares you to engage with the pulse of urban life - sensing, documenting, analysing, and interpreting its complexities to drive your creative work. Advanced digital tools - such as data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) - are harnessed to empower your design practice.
Collaborating with city-makers in government, industry, civil society, and local communities, you will create innovative and informed visions for urban life in Jakarta, Indonesia, Asia and beyond.
Interwoven Curriculum
Our curriculum combines three essential approaches to form a cohesive learning experience:
- Theory-practice integration: Connecting ideas and actions through diverse media - writing, drawing, three-dimensional modelling, and cartography - within interactive formats such as seminars, studios, and exhibitions.
