Overview
Prioritising environmental systems and climate resilience for sustainable development.
The Monash Indonesia Master of Urban Design course provides frameworks for the development and delivery of climate resilient, community engaged and technologically astute precinct plans for Indonesian cities via the translation of high level strategic planning strategies into regional integrated spatial plans.
Real world projects
The course will adopt a transdisciplinary framework, by forging a coalition of government and industry partners and by deploying complementary disciplines to train highly strategic urban professionals.
The project-based course will use the spatial plan as the tool for integration of a range of interdisciplinary offerings, facilitated by Big Data and data science platforms and through a significant process of co-design and community and stakeholder engagement.
Design studios are not predetermined, instead they are shells to accommodate changing content based on consultation with government and industry partners, and on the project requirements of the spatial plan at hand.
The studios will be complemented by key disciplinary inputs around key themes such as ecology/health, data science, community engagement and regulation/policy.
Flexible study options
The Master of Urban Design may be taken full time or part time, with units delivered via a combination of face to face and online modes.
You may leave after Part A with a Certificate in Urban Design or after Parts A & B with a Diploma in Urban Design.
Graduates of the complete Master of Urban Design will be equipped with the conceptual, creative and technical skills to develop integrative solutions to the complex urban challenges resulting from climate change, environmental degradation and development inequalities.
Multidisciplinary participants
The course is open to applicants from relevant backgrounds, including graduates of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture.
Graduates may seek employment in government departments, public enterprises, private development companies, or NGOs.
Course structure
Part A. Foundation24 credit points
Part B. Smart city design24 credit points
Part C. Climate resilient city design24 credit points
Part D. Advanced urban design24 credit points
The handbook's description of this structure
The course comprises design studios, undertaken in project mode and in collaboration with real local government agencies, and supportive study units that provide knowledge of urban design and planning contexts, regulations and techniques, including mapping tools, AI & data analytics.
The course is structured in four parts: Part A. Foundation, Part B. Smart City Design, Part C. Climate Resilient City Design, and Part D. Advanced Urban Design.
Part A. Foundation
You will undertake a foundational design-based studio unit that introduces you to this project mode as well as urban design methods from a perspective of climate resilience. It is supported by a history of the discipline in practice, and study units that provide a grounding in the ecological frameworks of the city and data science for smart cities.
Part B. Smart City Design
The studio component is based on smart city design concepts, with reference to real world issues. In the study units, you extend your knowledge of ecological frameworks and data science for smart cities (Big Data analytics) while also learning about the Indonesian statutory planning context.
Part C. Climate Resilient City Design
The studio component is increased to 12cp and focuses on climate sustainability and resilience as a consideration of integrated urban design practice, supported by a study elective in ecology and urban health. You will also extend your knowledge of the regulatory environment with a second statutory planning unit.
Part D. Advanced Urban Design
You will bring together the knowledge and experience from the previous semesters into an integrated urban design thesis (taken in project or scholarly mode). The compulsory study unit introduces community and stakeholder engagement strategies for successful development and implementation of design plans. You may take an elective from any of the other offerings at MI.
Note: If you are interested in progressing to research training, you may take an independent research project unit in place of the final elective unit. In this unit, you will conceptualise and present a final project work in the context of contemporary theory and practice.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part B, Part C and Part D
- If you are admitted at entry level 3 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part C and Part D
Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each teaching period.
The course comprises 96 points structured in four parts: Part A. Foundation (24 points), Part B. Smart City Design (24 points), Part C. Climate Resilient City Design (24 points) and Part D. Advanced Urban Design (24 points).
You must complete four 24 points semesters, which can be taken flexibly.
