Overview

The Graduate Certificate of Clinical Simulation enables you to apply principles and theories that inform educational practice in a range of clinical and other relevant contexts to undertake professional and highly skilled work and as a pathway for further learning. This practice-based qualification is suitable for a broad range of health professionals who are, or will be, engaged in simulation-based education. This includes in teaching, assessment, evaluation, mentoring and supervision of health professionals and students in a range of clinical and other contexts. The qualification is also suited to health professionals who use simulation for healthcare service quality improvement or systems testing. However, the use of simulation as an educational method is prioritised.

Course structure

Core units24 credit points
You must complete 12 credit points from the approved list of short courses with assessment and the following unit.

You must complete two of the following:
- Learning and teaching with simulation
- Scenario design for simulation-based education
- Learning conversations: Feedback and debriefing practices in clinical practice and in simulation
OR
You must complete one of the following:
- Learning and teaching with simulation
- Scenario design for simulation-based education
- Learning conversations: Feedback and debriefing practices in clinical practice and in simulation, AND
One of the following (breadth) courses:
- Quality supervision in health and human services course
- Technology for education in clinical healthcare (EdTech)

This course consists of 24 credit points of Clinical Simulation studies undertaken as a combination of units and short courses.

This study will provide you with professional teaching and advanced supervisory skills in both clinical and non-clinical environments using simulation as an educational method. It will facilitate the application of principles and theories that inform simulation educational practice and specialist knowledge through the choice of elective studies.

  • You will receive specified credit for assessed short courses that you completed successfully prior to your enrolment in this course.
  • Not all short courses are available every semester.

The course comprises 24 points structured into three units.

Note: You will receive 12 points of specified credit for elective units for prior studies by means of assessed short courses.

All units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

You must complete:

  • HCS5100 Foundations of health professions education: Simulation (12 points)
  • Assessed short course 1 *
  • Assessed short course 2 *

* Assessed short courses must be chosen from the following list of short courses.  Please note that not all short courses are offered every semester.

You must complete two of the following:

  • MAP5501 Learning and teaching with simulation
  • MAP5503 Scenario design for simulation-based education
  • MAP5504 Learning conversations: Feedback and debriefing practices in clinical practice and in simulation

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level C, that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 6.5); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 58; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 94 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 24, Listening: 20, Reading: 19 and Speaking: 20; or Equivalent approved English test
