Overview
This graduate certificate provides students with advanced expertise and specialised knowledge in forensic nursing and midwifery. You will investigate contemporary issues in Australian health law and ethics and the role of health professionals in the assessment of cases of physical and sexual assault. You will gain knowledge of the Australian legal system, laws of evidence, the classification of injuries and forensic responsibilities arising from physical injury and sexual assault. You will gain skills in the preparation of a medico-legal report and giving evidence in court proceedings. You will also gain skills in the accurate documentation of injuries, collection of forensic evidence and consideration of complex ethical issues.
This course is suitable for nursing and midwifery graduates interested in developing or enhancing specialist careers in medicolegal issues.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

Describe the structure of the Australian criminal justice system and the role of forensic evidence in alleged matters of physical and/or sexual assault.

Demonstrate skills in the preparation of medico-legal reports for and presentation of medico-legal evidence to Australian courts.
- 3
Accurately identify, classify, interpret and document a range of injuries and injury patterns that may arise from physical and/or sexual assault.

Apply knowledge and demonstrate skills in the use of forensic photography equipment to produce high quality photographic evidence.
- 5
Perform adult clinical forensic examinations to detect, assess, interpret and document evidence of physical and/or sexual assault.

Apply recommended techniques for the collection, preservation and documentation of evidence taken during physical and/or sexual assault clinical forensic examinations to meet the legal guidelines for admissibility in Australian court proceedings.

Appropriately interpret and incorporate medical ethics principles to the practice of a forensic nursing and midwifery.

Monash Level C: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 6.5); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 65 overall with no band lower than 58; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 94 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 24, Listening: 20, Reading: 19 and Speaking: 20; or Equivalent approved English test
