Overview

This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to enable health professionals to effectively manage acute, chronic and complex wounds. The course builds on the Graduate Certificate of Wound Care (M4027), and you have the opportunity to undertake elective units relevant to your area of practice, career aspirations or interest.

The course is structured in two parts: Part A. Foundation studies and Part B. Discipline studies.

Part A. Foundation studies

In these studies, you will gain the theoretical foundation to effectively manage individuals with wounds, utilising contemporary evidence-based wound care practices to optimise healing.

Part B. Discipline studies

In these studies, you will be able to consolidate the theoretical foundation gained in Part A. You will gain further knowledge and skills to enable you to integrate evidence-based interventions and high-level problem-solving skills into the formulation and evaluation of management plans for those with more complex wounds. Furthermore, you will develop your ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, improving your communication skills at patient, peer and workplace level.

Graduate Diploma's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry Level 1 you will complete 48 credit points, comprising Parts A and B
  • If you are admitted at entry Level 2 you will complete 24 credit points, comprising Part B

Course progression map

The course progression map will provide guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

The course comprises 48 points structured into two parts: Part A. Foundation studies (24 points), and Part B. Discipline studies (24 points). You must complete all parts sequentially.

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Foundation studies (24 points)

You must complete:

  • MWC5201 Principles of wound healing
  • MWC5202 Wound assessment
  • MWC5203 Wound management principles
  • MWC5204 Acute and chronic wounds

Part B. Discipline studies (24 points)

You must complete the PGC5101 and MWC5205 and 12 credit points from the following

  • PGC5101 Evidence based practice
  • MWC5205 Integrated wound care practice
  • MPH5020 Introduction to epidemiology and biostatistics
  • NUR5208 Therapeutic medication management (Prescribing) (12 points)*
  • MWC5206 The diabetes foot
  • MWC5207 Pressure injury management
  • MWC5211 Non-healing wounds and pain management
  • HPE5100 Foundations of health professions education (12 points)
  • MPD0050 Pharmacotherapy and wound care (short course/microcredential) (6 points)

Learning outcomes

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

    Critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise evidence-based knowledge that informs the development of safe, effective and ethical wound care practices.

    Effectively assess, plan and manage those individuals at risk of developing wounds or requiring wound care.

  3. 3

    Effectively disseminate specialised wound care knowledge which promotes collaboration and enhances positive clinical outcomes.

  4. 4

    Evaluate the impact of wound care delivery on health outcomes of those with wounds.

  5. 5

    Critically analyse epidemiology, health inequality and health demands in relation to individuals who are at risk of developing wounds and/or need wound care.

    Work respectfully with diverse patient groups in choosing culturally safe and responsive strategies.

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level D, that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 7.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 65; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score 98 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 27, Listening: 24, Reading: 24 and Speaking: 23; or Equivalent approved English test

Pathways

A Monash Graduate Certificate of Wound Care (M4027) with a minimum mark of 60% in all units.

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to the Master of Wound Care (M6035).
