Overview

This course, offered by Nursing and Midwifery, prepares nurses for leadership roles in specialist practice, management, education, disaster nursing and trauma nursing. The course enables development of advanced practice knowledge and leadership in specialist practice including skills to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care, as well as the ability to formulate policy for a diverse and multicultural society. Graduates are employed in a wide range of general and specialist clinical, educational and healthcare environments in senior positions and contribute to the health of individuals, families and communities, in addition to the development of the profession.

Part A. Specialist nursing practice studies24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points from one of the following nursing specialisations. Note: Trauma Nursing specialisation is not offered in 2022.

The course is structured in two parts. Part A. Specialist nursing practice studies and Part B. Research and advanced scholarly practice.

PART A. Specialist nursing practice studies

These studies provide options for registered nurses seeking leadership roles to take a professional specialisation appropriate for individual career aspirations. The studies draw on best practices within the nursing specialisations for the development of advanced knowledge and skills.

PART B. Research and advanced scholarly practice

The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options:

  • a 24 or 36 credit point research program. If you wish to use this master's course as a pathway to a graduate research degree you should take this option.
  • a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at Entry level 1 you complete 96 credit oints.
  • If you are admitted at Entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points.
  • If you are admitted at Entry level 3 you complete 48 credit points.

Note: All students complete Part A and B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part B or a combination of both. If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

Credit is usually awarded for speciality or elective units and will be assessed individually. If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

  • MPH5203 Environmental influences on health unit (6 points)

Nursing education

You must complete:

  • NUR5204 Education in health care practice
  • NUR5209 Education program development

Nursing leadership and management

You must complete:

  • NUR5325 Clinical leadership in nursing (6 points)
  • NUR5326 Leading improvement and innovation in the quality and safety of nursing and healthcare (6 points) or MPH5268 Financial issues in health care management (6 points)
  • NUR5327 Management and leadership of professional nursing practice

Advanced nursing studies

You must complete 24 points of elective units listed in Part B

Trauma nursing (NOT OFFERED IN 2022)

You must complete:

PART B. Research and advanced scholarly practice (72 points)

You must complete:

Above Monash minimum: Level B that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (with individual band scores of Writing: 6.0, Listening: 6.5, Reading: 6.5 and Speaking: 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 58 overall with minimum scores: Writing 50, Listening 58, Reading 58, Speaking 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing 21, Listening 20, Reading 19, Speaking 18; or Equivalent approved English test
