This course, offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, provides professionals currently in, or seeking to be in, middle and senior health care management positions who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the management of health services. It caters for the special needs of medical and general hospital administrators, clinical doctors, quality assurance managers, team leaders, senior nursing administrators, unit managers and a range of general task coordinators within the health care system.

The handbook's description of this structure
The course is structured in three parts: Part A. Foundations of healthcare administration and management, Part B. Advanced healthcare administration and management, and Part C. Extending specialist knowledge electives.
Part A. Foundations of healthcare administration and management
These studies provide you with an understanding of the knowledge and skills in the broad domain of healthcare administration and management including public health, epidemiology, biostatistics and research methods.
Part B. Advanced healthcare administration and management
These studies provide you with a comprehensive study of health management and administration, enabling you to gain advanced skills and knowledge. This includes areas of health system law, clinical leadership and management, quality improvement, financial and information management, health policy, health economics, and health services development.
Part C. Extending specialist knowledge electives
These studies enable you to develop specialised knowledge and advanced skills in areas that suit your interests, skills and career goals. The theoretical and practical skills you gain are consolidated through the completion of a case study, in which you focus on exploring in detail a complex health management problem within your workplace or within a health care setting.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications/work experience you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C.
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part B and Part C.
- If you are admitted at entry level 3 you complete 48 credit points, comprising MPH5220, MPH5273, 12 credit points from Part A, and 18 credit points from Part C.*
*Note: depending on your prior qualifications and work experience (at least two years of relevant management experience in the field of health and public health administration in the health industry) you may be required to complete less credit points.
