Overview

The course prepares pharmacists for advanced health care practice roles in acute care, primary care, aged care or research. It is designed to develop advanced knowledge and skills in therapeutic decision-making, evidence-based practice and person-centred care to improve the quality use of medicines.

Course structure

Part A. Foundation for advanced practice6 credit points
Part B. Specialist fields of practice6 credit points
You must complete 6 credit points from the following or an additional unit from Part A above

Monash University MMR Training Program (MUMTP) microcredential

6 credit points
If you are a registered pharmacist in Australia, you may choose to complete the Monash University MMR Training Program (MUMTP) in place of one 6 credit point elective unit. You may complete the MUMTP prior to or during your enrolment in this course. Note: the administrative unit code for the microcredential is PMC5001 Medication management review training program.

Complementary study

6 credit points
You may complete up to 6 credit points of complementary units which will be assessed by the course director, to ensure the proposed units are not substantially similar to units offered within the faculty and offer equivalency of content and learning outcomes, and whether there is significant educational advantage for the proposed program of study. Consideration will be given to assessed versions of short courses/micro-credentials for example those offered by Monash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education (MCSHE) and the Monash School of Clinical Sciences.

This course comprises 12 credit points structured into two parts: Part A. Foundations for advanced practice, Part B. Specialist fields of practice

Part A. Foundations for advanced practice

In this part of the course, you will select at least one core unit of study to advance your professional expertise in evidence-based practice and therapeutic decision-making within acute, primary or aged care contexts.

Part B. Specialist fields of practice

In this part of the course, you will select study that suits your career aspirations, allowing you to advance your knowledge and skills in more specialist clinical or professional fields of practice. Electives comprise of assessed short courses (i.e. microcredentials) and approved units.

The course comprises 12 points structured into two parts: Part A. Foundations for advanced practice and Part B. Specialist fields of practice

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Foundation for advanced practice (6 points) 

You must complete 1 unit (6 points) from the following:

  • PGC5101 Evidence based practice
  • PGC5102 Advanced therapeutic decision-making: Acute care
  • PGC5116 Geriatric disease state management
  • PGC5201 Advanced therapeutic decision-making: Primary care

Part B. Specialist fields of practice (6 credit points) 

You must complete 6 points of study from the following:

  • PGC5110 Infectious disease pharmacotherapy
  • PGC5117 Mental Health 
  • PGC5118 Palliative Care
  • Additional unit from Part A
  • Monash University MMR Training Program (MUMTP) microcredential*
  • up to 6 points of complementary study**

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

    practice ethically, respectfully and collaboratively within legislative and professional boundaries at advanced levels of practice

    apply specialised knowledge as well as advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills to optimise patient care and quality use of medicines

    critically analyse sources of information (including but not limited to clinical decision support systems and clinical literature)  clinical literature, assessing the validity, reliability, and applicability of research findings to enhance decision-making

    demonstrate proficiency in person-centred care by incorporating patient preferences, values, and cultural considerations into therapeutic decision-making

    demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with both healthcare professionals and patients

  6. 6

    facilitates the transfer of specialised knowledge and skills to peers and other healthcare professionals through effective peer-learning and feedback

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level D, that is: IELTS: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 7.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 65; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score 98 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 27, Listening: 24, Reading: 24 and Speaking: 23; or Equivalent approved English test
