Overview

This course is designed for you if you aspire to be a leader in creating social change. Combining global studies with studies in fundamental science will give you the skill set to understand the complex challenges facing cultures and communities around the world and the opportunity to apply your knowledge to affect change. 

This double degree offers flexibility and choice through a wide selection of science majors and global studies specialist knowledge areas. You will broaden your horizons through international experiences.

This flexibility of choice allows you to explore new areas, utilise your critical thinking and analytical skills, further develop your strengths and pursue your own interests. Core units focusing on leadership development, a broad range of multidisciplinary electives and the compulsory overseas study component underpins a focus on the practical application of knowledge and skills to real life scenarios.

Overseas study costs

This course includes a compulsory overseas study component which can be met through any combination of overseas study including: the Global Immersion Guarantee, Global Campus Intensives, exchange or study abroad or any international study tour units. There are a range of overseas study options and students should refer to the faculty's study abroad webpage for more information including additional costs, as well as opportunities for funding*.

You must complete 192 credit points, of which 96 credit points are from the Bachelor of Science (including all of the requirements in Part A and Part B for the single degree) and 96 credit points from the Bachelor of Global Studies (including all of the requirements in Part A and Part B for the single degree).
Science component96 credit points
In choosing the 96 credit points of Bachelor of Science listed study over Part A and Part B, you must ensure that you complete six science listed units (36 credit points) at Level 1, and ten science listed units (60 credit points) at Levels 2 and 3 with a minimum of four (24 credit points) at Level 3.

You must complete the Mathematics and statistics unit requirement within the first 72 credit points of this double degree course.

The psychology extended major is not available in this double degree.

Science

S2000 Bachelor of Science is a comprehensive course and it will provide you with a broad, general science education, as well as specialist training in one or more science disciplines. This course is structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Science specified study

This will provide you with the mathematical or statistical foundation for your study of science. It will also expose you to different science disciplines contributing breadth to your understanding of science and giving you the opportunity to learn about several disciplines before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Science listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will learn to develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the discipline.

Global studies

A2001 Bachelor of Global Studies course is a specialist course structured in three parts. In the double degree course you complete the following two parts:

Part A. Global studies core

You will compare and contrast a range of global challenges and solutions in different historical, linguistic, cultural, and geographical settings, focussing especially on developing an understanding of effective collaboration, communication and leadership across a range of contexts.

Part B. Global studies specialist knowledge

You will gain in-depth knowledge of a specific facet or facets of global studies through units grounded in a wide variety of humanities and social science disciplines. These units will provide you with the practical and theoretical skills needed to critically analyse, communicate and formulate innovative solutions to global challenges.

Other applicants

All applicants must satisfy the VCE subject prerequisites demonstrating high performance in Year 12 or equivalent in English and in one unit of mathematics or science.

VET Diploma graduates: Applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a science-based diploma will require an average result of at least 60%. Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed a science-based diploma will require an average result of at least 70%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.

VET Certificate IV graduates: Applicants with science-based certificate IV level studies will require average results of at least 80%. For applicants who have also completed VCE, both qualifications will be considered. No credit is granted for these studies.

University: Two single units at an Australian higher education institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, especially in science areas. Applicants should have at least a 70% average in their studies. 

Any science-based studies used to meet the prerequisite for admission to the Bachelor of Science (or any associated double degrees with the Bachelor of Science) must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.
