Overview

This course will provide you with critical knowledge, tools and frameworks to implement innovative responses to our sustainability challenges. The units respectively deal with innovation and change on the individual, organisational and systems level, within the context of sustainability. The course is aimed at a diversity of sectors, ranging from business to public and non-for-profit sectors.

You must complete a minimum of three core units (18 points) from below:

Core studies

  • BEX5810 Sustainable business and innovation
  • ENS5520 Understanding human behaviour to influence change
  • BEX5200 Climate change and carbon management strategies
  • ENS5510 Innovation to influence system change

You must complete one unit from the list below or one additional core studies unit not previously completed.

  • ENS5530 Leading change for sustainable development
  • GCH5020 Business model design for innovative and sustainable technologies
  • MGF5600 Managing innovation

Learning outcomes

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

  1. 1

    Demonstrate a broad knowledge of sustainability challenges, in particular climate change, and the interdependence of society, the economy and the environment.

  2. 2

    Analyse complex challenges using frameworks and approaches including behavioural insights, organisational impact analyses or system thinking.

  3. 3

    Evaluate social and organisational theories and models of change, for example innovative organisational or sustainable business model responses, to highlight pathways to sustainability.

  4. 4

    Integrate creative thinking and evidence based approaches to design practical solutions that can achieve behavioural, organisational or systems change.

  5. 5

    Work collaboratively with people from varied backgrounds, incorporating a diversity of worldviews, disciplines and perspectives.

  6. 6

    Create support for change initiatives through effective communication

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level A, that is:  IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to the Master of Environment and Sustainability (S6002) and Master of Behaviour and Systemic Change (S6011).
