Overview
The Diploma of Art and Design is your first step towards completing your Monash Art, Design or Architecture degree.
You'll learn how to work independently and develop your problem solving, team work and time management skills to prepare you for success at Monash University. You will also enhance your creative thinking, and develop your conceptual and technical skills in this field. This Diploma will also enable you to further develop your portfolio of work.
In Part 1 of the course you will develop your personal folio, which will show your creative work.
In Part 2 of the course you can choose your area of specialisation to prepare you for your Monash bachelor degree. There are five streams to choose between: Architectural Design, Fine Art, Communication Design, Industrial Design, or Spatial Design.
During part 2 you will study the equivalent curriculum and complete the equivalent assessments as first year undergraduate students.
Note: Only students who complete the two trimesters of part 2 will be eligible to receive the diploma qualification.

The handbook's description of this structure
This Diploma course is structured in two parts:
Part 1. Foundation knowledge
These studies develop your creative skills and understanding of relevant theory and principles, as well as provide the opportunity to develop your personal folio, which will show your creative work. After successfully completing part 1, you may be accepted into first year of a relevant Monash University degree, but you must achieve the minimum grades set by the faculty.
Part 2. Discipline knowledge
You will study the equivalent curriculum and complete the assessments that are equivalent to first year undergraduate students. Your classes will help you develop your critical thinking skills and university research techniques. These skills will prepare you for success at Monash University.
In this part you will also choose your stream: Architectural Design, Fine Art, Communication Design, Industrial Design, or Spatial Design.
The course comprises 96 points structured in two parts: Parts 1. Foundation knowledge (48 points) and Part 2. Discipline knowledge (48 points).
Each unit is 6 credit points and students must complete:
