Overview

This unit explores advanced financial accounting issues, building on knowledge and skills gained in earlier units in financial accounting. A range of theories used to assess accounting decisions, reporting practices and regulation are examined. The unit focuses on a number of contemporary accounting issues including: measurement, intangible assets, financial instruments, foreign currency transactions and integrated reporting.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit engages students in actively applying their knowledge, skills and attributes in interactive, collaborative and reflective activities.

This unit includes problem-based learning approaches, where students engage in research, integrate theory and practice and apply knowledge and skills to develop viable solutions in response to a problem or set of problems.

This unit allows students to develop their research skills by engaging in structured inquiry using a systematic approach and discipline-specific methodologies.
