Film, Television and Screen Studies: Approaches

AMU1223

Synopsis

The unit uses key critical approaches developed within Film, Television and Screen Studies to better understanding the aesthetic and political dimensions of moving image texts. While Film, Television and Screen Studies: Forms looks inwards, exploring moving images through reference to their internal formal properties and techniques, Film, Television and Screen Studies: Approaches, looks outwards, placing texts within their broader contexts: films, television shows and other types of screenbased media (such as online content) are looked at in relation to key theories, such as authorship, genre and ideology, and contexts such as history, society and politics. These topics are explored through weekly screenings, which are examined in relation to a variety of critical approaches and draw on examples from diverse film and television genres, historical periods and national contexts.
