Overview

In this unit you will use key critical approaches developed within Film, Television and Screen Studies to better understand the aesthetic and political dimensions of moving image texts. While Film, Television and Screen Studies: Forms looks inwards, exploring moving images through reference to their internal formal properties and techniques, Film, Television and Screen Studies: Approaches, looks outwards, placing texts within their broader contexts. You will look at films, television shows and other types of screenbased media (such as online content) in relation to key theories, such as authorship, genre and ideology, and contexts such as history, society and politics. You will explore these topics through weekly screenings, which are examined in relation to a variety of critical approaches and draw on examples from diverse film and television genres, historical periods and national contexts.
