Overview

E-commerce has come a long way since the days of e-portals, yet while some issues such as taxation remain largely unresolved, other issues like accessibility have moved on as new types of screens and devices come into common everyday use. What are the key stages of online commerce? How is it different from ‘bricks-and-mortar’ retail and wholesale? Do customers who buy online behave differently? What are the factors that e-commerce entrepreneurs need to understand and watch out for? This unit introduces students to e-commerce analysing the process from the front-end to the back-end. From the policies that enable e-commerce and the software that underlines their operation to the social exchanges that are core to the online shopping experience, students will explore the practical as well as the infrastructural and socio-technological aspects of e-commerce and be exposed to industry expertise.
