Overview

Although digital media started as a textual medium, they are now, with the introduction of sophisticated cameras and wide range of apps on mobile phones, increasingly incorporating visual material. This unit focusses on the visual turn that digital media has taken and seeks to address how, and if, that changes how societies, individuals and corporations communicate with each other. The unit provides students with an introduction to digital image editing and manipulation alongside critical analysis and use of the creativity that digital visual culture offers to users. Students will be given opportunity to create digital media artefact with industry-relevant software. They will explore the structure and strengths of viral media; understand how digital media platforms govern and regulate the use of visual elements and; how filters, appropriation and copyright work in the digital context.
