Overview
This unit will provide training in the latest discipline-specific methodologies in philosophy and historical studies for students enrolled in the new Master of Arts Research Training. The unit will have separate philosophy and historical studies streams. Students will be required to nominate one stream only.
In philosophy, students will receive expert training in ways of arguing and evaluating arguments in a selection of the following sub-disciplines: experimental philosophy, applied ethics, history of philosophy, the continental tradition, non-western philosophy, social and political philosophy, and logic.
In historical studies, students will receive expert training in approaches and methodologies in gender, Indigenous, oral, political, social, and cultural history, as well as in archaeology and the history of science and medicine.
There will be two components to each stream:
(1) Students will examine and evaluate different methodological approaches in sub-disciplines within their chosen field. They will be taught the skills required to synthesise and analyse core recommended readings, and to demonstrate their understanding and comprehension of a selection of methodologies.
(2) Students will demonstrate their mastery of one or more of these methodological approaches by completing an original research paper under the supervision of an academic staff member in their field.
