Overview

Evaluation plays a vital role in providing government ministers, public managers, policy advisers and other interested parties with quality information on the success or otherwise of specific programs. This unit introduces students to program evaluation techniques and how they can be used to generate quality information about program performance. The unit provides students with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively commission and conduct program evaluations. Topics include: identifying issues and formulating questions for effective program evaluation; assessing and monitoring program processes, program outcomes and program impact; measurement issues; and alternative strategies for program evaluation.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit includes problem-based learning approaches, where students engage in research, integrate theory and practice and apply knowledge and skills to develop viable solutions in response to a problem or set of problems.   

This unit engages students in actively applying their knowledge, skills and attributes in interactive, collaborative and reflective activities. 

This unit allows students to develop their research skills by engaging in structured inquiry using a systematic approach and discipline-specific methodologies.
