Overview

This unit offers postgraduate students across the Faculty of Arts a chance to engage with real-world issues around language diversification, translation, and access in relation to screen media, whilst exploring aspects of film history and aesthetics, media distribution, and informal media economies. Reflecting on links between screen media and globalisation, you will gain an understanding of past and present media industry practices where translation and language play a pivotal role. The unit includes modules on screen translation history and ongoing debates, digital communities and informal media flows, language politics and on-demand streaming, industry style guides and standards, media accessibility, and hands-on media production processes.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critically reflect upon debates in historical and contemporary screen translation;

    Effectively analyse media products by applying theories of screen translation;

    Analyse and assess appropriate language policy and translation strategies as applied in the process of media production;

    Apply technical skills in relation to intralingual and/or interlingual texts on screen;

    Produce media products in which audio, visual and textual elements are coherently aligned and through which cross-cultural competence is demonstrated.
