Overview
Explores fundamental principles of sustainable architectural design focusing on the investigation and integration of appropriate materials, structures, fabrication methods and component systems as they apply to building construction and performance. This includes the study of material properties, historical context, environmental sustainability and impacts, and involves assessment of architectural performance and application in design.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Communicate ideas through the conventions of detailed architectural drawings;

Explain the basic principles of bio-climatic design;

Interpret the influence that the principles of circular economy and life-cycle design have on architectural design and performance;

Demonstrate understand and describe the physical, environmental and structural properties and performance of common materials in relation to a detailed and integrated architectural assembly;

Situate activities within a historic and contemporary development of construction materials, component systems and fabrication techniques;

Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.
