Overview

This unit introduces structural and environmental performance as it relates to architectural design and construction. Applied physical and digital testing will be used to understand and assess the application of building systems and materials to architecture. A range of environmental and structural behaviours will be addressed in response to life-cycle optimisation and resource efficiencies as well as being located with their historical and conceptual contexts.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Understand and describe traditional and contemporary structural and environmental performance in works of architecture at various scales;

  2. 2

    Apply, test, analyse and prioritise advanced principles of structural and resource efficiency, and circular design;

  3. 3

    Combine different technologies, materials and systems to propose strategies that inform architectural performance at various scales;

  4. 4

    Demonstrate collaboration skills and take responsibility for effective group work;

  5. 5

    Recognise strategies and tactics that generate positive impacts through the selection of different construction methods and materials;

  6. 6

    Apply knowledge through case-studies, digital and physical modelling, evaluation, and feedback in response to a brief.
