Overview

This unit is the first part of a sequence progressing from the upper intermediate to the advanced levels of Japanese. In this unit, students will undertake various activities integrating listening, speaking, reading and writing covering spoken language and contemporary written language. Activities are built around topics relating to Japanese communication strategies, social issues, your own values, and cultural interaction. In this unit, you will critically analyse information from Japanese-language media regarding current and/or historical issues, and write effective narrative/biographical and explanatory reports by using formal and academic Japanese.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    comprehend and respond to standard written and spoken Japanese media sources;

    perform textual analysis and summaries of complex written passages, demonstrating recognition and use
    of 800 kyōiku kanji including 150 additional kanji frequently used in the media;

    competently communicate orally and textually on a variety of topics using appropriate speech styles in both spontaneously and prepared settings;

  4. 4

     employ sophisticated research and critical thinking skills in analysis of aspects of Japanese culture and society.
