Overview

This unit is the first part of a sequence progressing from the upper intermediate to the advanced levels of Japanese. In this unit, you will undertake various activities integrating listening, speaking, reading and writing, covering spoken language and contemporary written language. Activities are built around topics relating to Japanese communication strategies, social issues, your own values, and cultural interaction. In this unit, you will critically analyse information from Japanese-language media regarding current and/or historical issues, and write effective narrative/biographical and explanatory reports by using formal and academic Japanese.

    Perform textual analysis and summaries of complex written passages, demonstrating recognition and use of 800 kyōiku kanji including 150 additional kanji frequently used in the media

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This Advanced Japanese Language unit uses active learning strategies to create an engaging environment to develop and refine reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Following the immersive language teaching approach of the program, classes will be conducted exclusively in Japanese.

You will work with peers in groups and pairs in class. You have interactive discussions to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the topic, and reinforce your learning.

Research project and presentation produce over the course of the semester. Students will be introduced to a range of resources to support language study and research activities.
