Overview
The unit will examine migrant groups in comparison and in contact. The unit deals with the ways in which post-World War Two migrant communities have established themselves in Melbourne and the cultures they have created as part of the evolving fabric of the city. The multidisciplinary unit will focus on diverse intersecting cultural expressions in the areas of performance (music, theatre, film) as well as language, literature and culinary culture (food). The unit will include an experiential learning component that may include performances, food tastings or short field trips to museums, cultural centres and/or other significant community sites during which students will also be able to reflect on the theories of intercultural encounters they have been introduced to in the classroom. Each time the unit is offered, it will focus on two groups, which may include Greek, Jewish, Italian, Vietnamese or Chinese communities or others.
