Overview

Decolonisation--the process of attaining independence from foreign domination--is one of the central features of contemporary world history. It is understood to be both a political event and a socioeconomic and cultural process that can take generations to realise. This unit investigates the rise of modern decolonisation movements, the enduring legacies of colonialism, and the ongoing push for decolonisation in the contemporary world. Typically with a focus on Asia and Africa, this unit examines the period from the eighteenth century to the present.
