Overview

This major examines the global impact of Asian countries, cultures and economies. This knowledge is of critical importance to all future professionals aiming to sharpen their Asia-literacy in what is now known as the Asian Century. This major combines an interdisciplinary approach with a rigorous research-led approach to examine a range of issues relating to the history, politics, society, economy and culture of Asian countries, their influence in the world, as well as the variety of expressions of individual experience. It focusses in particular on China, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia and South Asia. Its units are taught and assessed in English, and the major and its units can be usefully combined with any of the Asian language majors.

Rules
No more than 12 credit points at level 1 may be credited to the major and at least 18 credit points must be at level 3.

You must complete one of the following options
Level 2 cornerstone units6 credit points
Level 3 capstone units6 credit points
Level 2 and 3 elective units24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points from the remaining cornerstone and capstone units or from the elective units below, with at least 2 units at level 3.

In addition to achieving the broad outcomes of your course, and successfully completing this area of study, you will be able to:

    analyse and evaluate the key concepts, theoretical frameworks and scholarly debates in the study of Asia, the idea and imagination of Asia, and specifically the impact of globalisation in Asia.

    apply a variety of analytical tools, including the use of digital tools and resources, and develop research and communication skills to explore and discuss issues pertaining to Asian societies and cultures in a global context.

    recognise and apply discipline-specific research methods to examine the diversity of cultural values and world views in the Asian region
