Overview

In this unit, you will discover the core principles of global cultural heritage from an archaeological and historical perspective. You will examine theoretical concepts and see how they can be applied to real-world case studies. Issues addressed include cultural heritage discovery, management, protection, policy-making and community engagement in a global context. This unit is designed to prepare you to engage with the cultural heritage industry, government and post-graduate study.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit engages you in enquiry-based learning in which you are encouraged to use material presented in lectures and readings, as well as your own knowledge and lived experience, to identify approaches to the study of cultural heritage and to consider the full spectrum of consequences to the application of different actions.

This unit includes case-based teaching, where you apply your knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to consider complex scenarios involving cultural heritage in a variety of specific contexts (archaeological sites, museums, archives, oral histories). You will work in groups to examine, analyse and make decisions about the engagement with, and protection of, cultural heritage.
