Overview
Literature is often seen as an aspect of a specific culture, but some of the world's most memorable and significant literary works are about journeys between cultures and the crossing of boundaries beyond one's own habitual horizons. In this unit, you will investigate a number of key literary texts and scholarly concepts that examine notions of cultural difference and offer insights into diverse socio-historical and aesthetic-intellectual environments. You will explore texts that produce new and provocative ways of looking at how humans have negotiated, and continue to negotiate, identities in transnational and global contexts. You will have the opportunity to study a range of texts that bring to light connections between and among cultures, as well as learn about the theoretical terms, conceptual methods and contextual frameworks that underpin such study.
