Overview
In this unit, you will learn the advanced techniques and applications of transcriptomic analysis. Three core methodologies will be explored: bulk RNA sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), and spatial transcriptomics. The unit is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how transcriptomic data is generated, processed, and analysed. You will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge computational tools and techniques, enabling you to interpret complex transcriptomic data and derive meaningful biological insights.
Throughout the unit, you will participate in a range of learning activities, including online lectures, hands-on workshop sessions, and case study analyses. These activities will help you develop the skills needed to handle various scales of transcriptomic data and apply them to real-world research questions in genomics, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences. By the end of the unit, you will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to conduct sophisticated transcriptomic analyses and contribute to advancements in the field.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Differentiate between bulk RNA sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics techniques.
- 2
Process and analyse raw transcriptomic data from bulk, single-cell, and spatial RNA sequencing experiments.
- 3
Apply bioinformatics tools and software for analysing transcriptomic data, including normalization, differential expression analysis, and pathway analysis.
- 4
Evaluate single-cell RNA sequencing data to identify cell types, states, and trajectories using clustering, dimensionality reduction, and pseudotime analysis.
- 5
Interpret spatial transcriptomics data to map gene expression patterns within tissue architecture and understand the spatial context of cellular processes.
- 6
Translate transcriptomic findings into biological insights and hypotheses, focusing on gene function, regulation, and interaction networks.
- 7
Critically review and communicate recent advancements and relevant literature in the field of advanced transcriptomics.
Workload and teaching
6 hours of teacher directed study per week, including 2-3 hours of on-line lectures and 3-4 hours of workshops. 6 hours per week of self-directed study.
