Overview

This unit is drawn on the existing and emerging legal and regulatory aspects governing banking and financial sector. You will be introduced to a range of legal issues covering traditional banking, financial advice and sale of financial products, consumer credit, securities and lending, electronic payments, fintech and anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing. This unit will be of interest if you wish to develop a deeper understanding of regulatory aspects in banking and finance sector.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    examine the legal relationship between a banker and customer

    identify and critically analyse various consumer credit protection provisions and policies in Australia with regard to loans and credit cards

    identify and critically explore the regulatory architecture for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing in Australia

    identify and examine legal and regulatory issues with regard to lending and securities, electronic banking, financial technology and financial services and products to provide solutions to real-world problems in these areas.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. This unit includes case-based teaching, where you apply your knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to solve complex contextual scenarios. Activities are often designed so that there is not one clear answer, but you need to work together to examine, analyse and make decisions to resolve the situation.

This unit includes problem-based learning approaches, where you engage in research, integrate theory and practice and apply knowledge and skills to develop viable solutions in response to a problem or set of problems.

This unit engages you in actively applying your knowledge, skills and attributes in interactive, collaborative and reflective activities.
