Enrolment rules
You must be currently enrolled in a master’s course in engineering or related STEM and in a related discipline. The unit assumes that you have the necessary foundational knowledge.
Overview
In this unit, you will be introduced to autonomous systems broadly and autonomous vehicle (AV) systems, in particular, along with how these technologies are developed. You will gain foundational systems engineering knowledge of AVs, including their core building blocks, how they are designed, integrated and coordinated to achieve fully autonomous driving in complex and unpredictable environments. It will also support your learning by providing opportunities to engage with autonomous vehicle technologies and explore the processes involved in testing, validating, and refining these systems for real-world use.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Appraise the overall architecture of an autonomous vehicle (AV) system, including its key components and functionalities.
- 2
Apply learned concepts to design algorithms for key AV functionalities, including localisation, perception, planning, and control.
- 3
Critically analyse the integration of the AV system, focusing on testing and validation of algorithms and system decision-making.
- 4
Evaluate the performance and interactions of the AV system within urban networks, considering various factors like safety, efficiency, and adaptability.
- 5
Synthesise findings, insights, or professional recommendations related to AV systems to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
You will participate in interactive workshops and computer laboratories designed to deepen your understanding of lecture content through individual or group activities.
You are expected to prepare each week by reviewing lecture notes and watching the pre-recorded videos.
To deepen your understanding of key concepts and principles, you will complete problem-solving tasks individually or in small group settings.
