Overview
This unit focuses on flood modelling for engineering design. Methods to estimate design flood magnitudes from experimental observations will be presented. Hydrologic and hydraulic routing models will be introduced along with software packages that apply these models.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Run operational hydrologic models.
- 2
Parameterize models.
- 3
Undertake flood frequency analysis.
- 4
Analyse digital terrain models and outlines catchments.
- 5
Understand hydraulics and apply hydraulic models.
- 6
Understand runoff routing and apply operational routing models.
- 7
Understand and apply state updating techniques.
- 8
Work both independently and collaboratively on flood management problems.
Workload and teaching
- Practical activities24 hours
- Lectures12 hours
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
Face-to-face classes, for students studying on campus, and distance education, for students who are studying remotely. The main learning approach is “Problem-based learning” which requires students to be involved as proactive learners in the projects and activities. There are no right or wrong answers to many of the project questions and activities. This does not imply that any answer is adequate. Some answers will be better than others as they achieve the criteria in a better way.
