PREREQUISITE: DEV2011 or equivalent unit

Overview

This unit investigates the structure of the human body and organ systems (gross anatomy and histology), including their developmental origins. You will gain a deep understanding of how the structure of the human body (both macro and microscopic) relates to its function and the development of specific organs and organ systems by building upon the microscopic knowledge foundations gained in DEV2011. You will learn how the primary tissue types can combine to form organs and help with execution of organ function.  In studying this unit, you will learn anatomical terminology and principles, how organs work together in systems as well as how embryogenesis yields both typical and variant anatomical structures.

The assessment tasks and laboratories in the unit are designed to build employability skills which emphasise human ethics, investigative research skills, critical thinking and communication. You will be provided with hands-on anatomy experience, which serves to improve understanding of structural relationships, provided within the world-class anatomical sciences and biomedical science laboratories

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Describe the general anatomical structure of the human body and selected body systems;

  2. 2

    Describe the microscopic structure of the human body and how the primary tissue types combine to form a complete organism impacting on gross anatomical structures;'

  3. 3

    Explain how the general body plan is established in the embryo, and how this determines adult anatomical structure and impacts congenital anomalies;

  4. 4

    Demonstrate your ability to work collaboratively with peers and communicate effectively in oral and written forms;

  5. 5

    Demonstrate gross and micro anatomy practical laboratory skills such as comparing and contrasting  structure, function and development;

  6. 6

    Evaluate ethical implications of learning from resources developed from human donors.

Workload and teaching

  • Lectures24 hours
  • Laboratories20 hours
  • Teaching approachOnline learning
  • Teaching approachEnquiry-based learning

A total of 12 hours per week including 6 hours of directed learning (such as lectures, laboratories and on-line activities) and 6 hours of private study

The lecture content will be available online, and provide the fundamental knowledge for the curriculum. Online learning will be used to complement and extend the lecture content.

To fulfill the unit learning outcomes, you will have multiple face to face laboratory classes where you will investigate anatomical specimens to complement and extend upon content taught in lectures.

Any student or staff member at Monash can gain free use of Anatomedia Online at any time or from any place.

General Anatomy (Eizenberg 2008 McGraw-Hill) Principles & Applications: This is your core textbook and it is highly recommended to have a permanent copy of this text. This will assist you in lectures and practical classes on Anatomical Principles.
Functional Histology (Kerr 2010 Mosby) - 2nd Edition (or 1st edition): This is a comprehensive guide to all things histology and has some excellent biological and functional concepts. VERY highly recommended for tissue biology.
Human Embryological and Developmental Biology (Carlson 2009 or latest edition Mosby): Good to remind you of important developmental biology concepts you learned in DEV2011 and will encounter in DEV2022.
For further reading any anatomy, embryology, histology texts.
