Requisites
Overview
In this unit you will adopt a systematic approach to the study of human pathology addressing the aeitiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and sequelae of human diseases as they affect tissue structures in major organ systems. You will study kidney and cardiovascular pathologies, brain pathologies, cancers, female and male pathologies, liver pathologies, and red blood cell pathologies in workshops and practical classes. You will write laboratory and pathology reports with an emphasis on environmental, molecular, genetic and clinical aspects of disease pathogenesis and the role of laboratory investigation in the diagnosis of specific diseases.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Explain how pathological conditions alter organ structure and function in human disease.
- 2
Use analytical techniques to generate clinical and pathological data for a range of human diseases including selected conditions of the kidney, brain, skin, liver and blood.
- 3
Use analytical techniques to evaluate clinical and pathological data for a range of human diseases including selected conditions of the kidney, brain, skin, liver and blood.
- 4
Distinguish between different modes of disease pathogenesis and examine how they may be interrupted by drugs.
- 5
Evaluate pathological and clinical data, including molecular markers and/or biomarkers, to determine a diagnosis.
Workload and teaching
- Tutorials24 hours
- Laboratories22 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
- One 2-hour tutorial;
- 2 hours of lectures (recorded material) and
- 6 hours of independent study per week
- 3 hours of laboratories (for 8 weeks)
Active Learning
The unit offers online lectures with active learning material and active tutorials for application of knowledge.
Lectures
Two one-hour lectures per week, provided as online video recordings.
Tutorials
One 2-hour tutorial per week, for active engagement with the lecture content and application of knowledge to problems in human pathology. Tutorials are an opportunity for students to clarify their understanding of online content and consolidate their knowledge. Attendance is strongly encouraged, but not compulsory.
Laboratory classes
Eight 3-hour laboratory classes during the semester.
Pre-laboratory class material
Laboratory classes are preceded by pre-class online modules one week prior to the laboratory class to support student preparation. The pre-class material forms part of the 6 hours of self-directed learning required per week.
Laboratory class material
Laboratory classes comprise orientation and safety material, assignment details and guidance, case studies, group demonstrations, histological slide and gross specimen viewing, hands-on exercises and in-class extended-matching question (EMQ) quiz assessments.
Post-laboratory class material
One laboratory class report.
Revision sessions
Revision sessions for consolidation of learning and assignment feedback are scheduled throughout the semester.
Resource materials
Videos of normal histology, histopathology and gross pathology, are provided to assist students with self-directed learning.
