Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to general pathology, that is the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human disease, their classification, and the process of progression. You will study a broad range of topics including cellular pathology and inflammation, immunopathology and infectious disease, neoplasia, blood disorders, haemodynamic disorders, obesity and diabetes. Through the study of these specific diseases, you will develop a broad appreciation of pathological processes that lead to the onset and outcomes of human disease. This unit will give you a strong knowledge base in human pathology before moving on to study diseases in organ systems, outlined in HUP3022. You will communicate your comprehension of human pathology through both written and oral methodologies.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Explain the pathological processes involved in the development of diseases, including the impact of acute and chronic stimuli on normal tissue function;

  2. 2

    Identify and distinguish between the various molecular, cellular and tissue changes associated with disease pathogenesis;

  3. 3

    Interpret pathology based data to differentiate between the different disease processes;

  4. 4

    Evaluate diagnostic tools for their potential to differentiate between disease processes;

  5. 5

    Research and interpret evidence-based pathology in order to communicate the processes driving disease.

Workload and teaching

  • Tutorials24 hours
  • Laboratories24 hours
  • Lectures24 hours
  • Teaching approachActive learning
  • One 2-hour tutorial per week;
  • 2 hours of lectures (recorded material) per week;
  • 3 hours of laboratories (for 8 weeks) and
  • 6 hours of independent study per week (including pre-class preparation and completion of assessment tasks).

This unit is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and laboratories, enabling you to both actively engage with content and apply your knowledge to various aspects of human pathology.

Lectures

Lectures explain the key concepts and information required for comprehension of the processes that drive pathology in various disease settings. These lectures are grouped into themes based on central topics or disciplines of pathology. Recorded lectures and notes are delivered via Moodle.

Tutorials

Tutorial attendance is strongly encouraged as they are an opportunity for you to clarify your understanding of unit content, reinforce key concepts, and discuss and consolidate your knowledge. Student-centered, small group activities will allow you to gauge your comprehension through the application of knowledge to problems based on human pathology.

Laboratories

Laboratory-based classes are designed to teach you laboratory skills and techniques used in the investigation of disease processes, such as histopathology and gross pathology. This hands-on approach is complemented by in-class discussions to consolidate the theory behind these techniques, and assist you with the analysis and presentation of pathology-based data. Pre-class modules will introduce you to the underlying theoretical knowledge of the techniques and disciplines investigated in class. Post-class activities will help you to consolidate this knowledge. Laboratories will allow you to apply your knowledge of human pathology in a practical setting
