Overview

This unit introduces you to general pathology, i.e. the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human disease, their classification and progression. A broad range of topics is discussed including cellular pathology and inflammation, immunopathology and infectious disease, neoplasia, blood disorders, haemodynamic disorders, obesity and diabetes. Principles are illustrated by reference to specific diseases. This approach will provide you with an understanding of general pathology and an appreciation of the causes and processes that lead to the onset and outcomes of human disease. This unit gives you a strong knowledge base in human pathology before moving on to study diseases in organ systems, outlined in HUP3022.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Explain the basic pathological processes involved in the development of diseases, and the impact of acute and chronic stimuli on normal tissue function;

  2. 2

    Use analytical techniques to identify and distinguish between the cellular and molecular changes associated with cell and tissue injury; inflammation; immunopathology; infection; vascular diseases; platlet abnormalities and metabolism;

  3. 3

    Interpret pathology data in order to differentiate between different disease processes;

  4. 4

    Critically evaluate advanced diagnostic tools for their potential to differentiate between disease processes.

  • Tutorials24 hours
  • Teaching approachActive learning
  • One 2-hour tutorial;
  • 2 hours of lectures (recorded material) ;
  • 3 hours of laboratories (for 8 weeks) and
  • 6 hours of independent study per week

The unit offers online lectures with active learning material and active tutorials for application of knowledge.
Lectures
Two one-hour lectures per week, provided as online video recordings.
Tutorials
One 2-hour tutorial per week, for active engagement with the lecture content and application of knowledge to problems in human pathology. Tutorials are an opportunity for you to clarify your understanding of online content, and consolidate their knowledge. Attendance is strongly encouraged, but not compulsory.
Laboratory classes
Eight 2-hour laboratory classes during the semester.
Pre-laboratory class material
Laboratory classes are preceded by pre-class online modules one week prior to the laboratory class to support your preparation. The pre-class material forms part of the 6 hours of self-directed
learning required per week.
Laboratory class material
Laboratory classes comprise orientation and safety material, assignment details and guidance, case studies, group demonstrations, histological slide and gross specimen viewing, hands-on exercises and in-class Extended Matching Question (EMQ) quiz assessments.
Post-laboratory class material
One laboratory class report.
Revision sessions
Revision sessions for consolidation of learning and assignment feedback are scheduled throughout the semester.
Resource materials
Videos of normal histology, histopathology and gross pathology, are provided to assist you with self-directed learning.
