Overview
This unit introduces you to general pathology, i.e. the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human disease, their classification and progression. A broad range of topics is discussed including cellular pathology and inflammation, immunopathology and infectious disease, neoplasia, blood disorders, haemodynamic disorders, obesity and diabetes. Principles are illustrated by reference to specific diseases. This approach will provide you with an understanding of general pathology and an appreciation of the causes and processes that lead to the onset and outcomes of human disease. This unit gives you a strong knowledge base in human pathology before moving on to study diseases in organ systems, outlined in HUP3022.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Examine and explain the basic pathological processes involved in the development of diseases, and the impact of acute and chronic stimuli on normal tissue function;
- 2
Use analytical techniques to identify and distinguish between the cellular and molecular changes associated with cell and tissue injury; inflammation; immunopathology; infection; vascular diseases; platlet abnormalities and metabolism;
- 3
Analyse and interpret pathology data in order to differentiate between different disease processes;
- 4
Identify and assess key diagnostic technologies used to study human disease;
- 5
Critically evaluate advanced diagnostic tools for their potential to differentiate between disease processes.
Workload and teaching
- Practical activities22 hours
- Lectures24 hours
- Laboratories30 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
- 6 hours of teacher-directed learning and
- 6 hours of self-directed learning per week
The unit offers online lectures and pre-practical material. This will allow the valuable face-to-face time to be more active and engaging.
Lectures
There will be two one-hour lectures per week. These will be provided as ‘online video recordings’ of lectures. You will find these on the HUP3011 Moodle site via the link in the unit schedule from the start of O week.
Tutorials
There will be one two-hour tutorial each week, covering the content of the previous week’s two lectures.
The tutorials are ‘lecture reflections’ designed to actively engage you with the ‘online video-recorded’ lecture material, using a problem-solving approach. Tutorials are offered for you to clarify points of confusion, and to reinforce their knowledge, understanding and application of the lecture material. Attendance is strongly encouraged, but not compulsory.
Workshops and Practicals
There will be four two-hour workshops and four two-hour practical sessions during the semester (check the unit timetable for details).
• Please refer to the unit schedule located on Moodle to know which Laboratory room you will be in between weeks 2 - 10. Greater than 80% attendance is required at the workshop/practical sessions to be eligible to sit the practical/workshop examination in week 12, except under special consideration circumstances (to be determined by the unit coordinator).
Pre-workshop/practical material
The workshop and practical sessions will be preceded by pre-class online modules to orientate you for the upcoming session. These will be available one week before the workshop/practical and close on the day of the workshop/practical. You will find these on the HUP3011 Moodle site via the link in the unit schedule from the start of week 0. The pre-class material forms part of the 6 hours of self-directed learning required per week.
Workshop/practical material
The workshops and practical sessions will comprise orientation and safety material, assignment details and guidance, case studies, group demonstrations, histological slide and gross specimen viewing, and hands-on exercises. You must achieve >80% attendance.
Post-workshop/practical material
• You are required to complete weekly (compulsory weeks 3-11) online EMQs (6 in total) that will be assessed (3% of final mark).
• For the week 4 practical session, you are required to complete a practical report (800 words). Submission of the practical report is through Turnitin online, via Moodle, within one week of the session. This practical report contributes 10% towards the final unit mark.
Revision sessions
Revision sessions will be held throughout the semester to assist you with your study and to provide feedback on assessments. Please see unit schedule for details.
Resource materials
Various resource materials, including videos of normal histology, histopathology and gross pathology pots, will be provided online to assist you with your private study. Have a look on Moodle under the resources tab.
