Overview

This unit examines the physical forces driving the geomorphic development of the earth both on land and in the ocean. It explores the rates of continental denudation, and the geological, climatic, biogeographic, and geomorphic processes that influence denudation. It explores sediment transport in the oceans, ocean circulation and mixing, ocean chemistry and productivity and hydrodynamic forces affecting coastlines. Particular attention will be paid to key geomorphic processes, such as riverine (fluvial geomorphic) and coastal processes such as erosion that pose significant management challenges for human societies.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Discuss the processes that underlie continental denudation, and some of the ways in which denudation rates are estimated.

  2. 2

Explain the ways in which past climates and biogeographic conditions may leave an imprint on the surface features of the continents and oceans.

  3. 3

Demonstrate a knowledge of fluvial and coastal geomorphic processes and their variation among physiographic, hydrodynamic and climatic environments.

  4. 4

Quantify the basic transport of sediments in the oceans and along the coastline.

  5. 5

Collect samples and interpret environmental conditions in marine environments

  6. 6

Develop a good working capability in using GIS for spatial and remote sensing data analysis.
