Overview

Spatial data are associated with geographical locations. A spatial database is a database system that provides spatial data types in its data model and query language and supports spatial data types in its implementation. This unit focuses on the theories that underpin the design of such spatially enabled databases and the fundamental principles and methods in their implementation. The major contents include the concepts of database systems and database models, structured query language, spatial database models and spatial database design, spatial data types, spatial indexing and spatial join, spatial operators and spatial querying, enterprise spatial databases and their implementation. It also introduces the open-source Postgres database management system and its spatial extension PostGIS, and ESRI’s proprietary file, mobile and enterprise geodatabases, and uses them as tools to facilitate the understanding of theories and the development of design and implementation skills.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Understand the characteristics of spatial databases;

  2. 2

    Grasp the principles of spatial databases and their design;

  3. 3

    Be proficient in solving practical spatial data modelling tasks;

  4. 4

    Design queries to interact with a spatial database;

  5. 5

Workload and teaching

  • Workshops24 hours
  • Practical activities30 hours
  • Teaching approachActive learning
  • 1-hour lecture videos;
  • 2-hour workshops;
  • 3-hour practicals/projects and
  • 6-hour independent study per week

The unit is composed of online pre-recorded lecture videos, recommended readings, two-hour workshops, and three-hour computer-based practicals/projects on a weekly basis. The workshops are designed to engage you in learning through (1) reviewing and discussing key concepts introduced in the online lecture videos, (2) presenting case studies, or (3) collectively designing and implementing a spatial database to address selected problems. The workshops and lecture videos are to explain the concepts and principles and demonstrate their applications. Practicals help develop skills and competency. The projects are designed to help develop ability to apply the learnt knowledge and skills to solve real world problems.
