Overview
This unit will introduce the concept of data management in an organisation through relational database technology. Theoretical foundation of relational model, analysis and design, implementation of relational database using SQL will be covered.

Semester 2, 2025 onwards: Monash FIT GitLab Server All students must maintain their unit work on the FIT GitLab server (https://git.infotech.monash.edu/) to provide a secure repository for completed work and demonstrate a clear development history. You will be provided with an account on this server. Monash Oracle and MongoDB Servers This unit uses the Oracle 12 and MongoDB databases running on Monash servers. All students will have an account on this server, which will suffice for all database work this semester. To access this server, you must install and run the Monash VPN software (details are available on the Moodle/Ed Lesson site). VSCode This unit uses VSCode as a client to access Oracle, MongoDB and FIT GitLab servers. You must install the latest version of this software. Data Modeler The client software for data modelling will be available for download from the unit Moodle/Ed Lesson site. You must ONLY use the prescribed version provided by the teaching team. You must not download and use Data Modeler from any other site.

MS Teams

SQL Developer
This unit will make use of the Oracle 12 database running on a Monash server. You will have an account on this server which will suffice for all database work this semester. To access this server you will need to install and run the Monash VPN software (details available from the Moodle site). The client software for accessing Oracle (SQL Developer) will be available via a download from the Unit Moodle site - you must ONLY use the prescribed version available from Moodle, you must not download and use SQL Developer from any other site.
