Overview

This unit presents an extensive range of power electronic converter applications with a focus on renewable energy resources integration. The unit starts with modelling of DC/DC and DC/AC converters and then continues to design various voltage/current closed-loop controllers for these converters. The designed closed-loop control systems are then extended to applications of these converters in renewable energy grid integration contexts such as wind and solar resources. Additionally, other advanced applications of power electronic converters such as static compensators, active filters, power factor correctors, energy storage systems, grid forming inverters, etc. are introduced.

Offerings in 2025

The 2025 handbook lists no offerings for ECE6156.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Formulate models of various power DC/DC and DC/AC electronic converters.

  2. 2

Design and analyse closed-loop controllers for DC/DC and DC/AC power electronic converters.

  3. 3

Demonstrate the use of power electronic converters in a wide range of applications including power systems and renewable energy grid integration.

  4. 4

Generate simulations of power converters for renewable energy grid integration and various ancillary services in the power system.

  5. 5

Experimentally assess the performance of the closed-loop control of power electronic systems such as active filters and static compensators.

Workload and teaching

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
