Overview
This unit provides you with the opportunity to experience mathematics as a problem-solving discipline and to explore how mathematical knowledge and positive dispositions for learning mathematics, both within the discipline itself and within individual learners, develops from activity (mental as well as physical), and reflection upon such activity. The unit challenges you to engage with activities designed to promote your personal understanding of mathematical concepts and processes while also developing a deep appreciation of how young children first learn mathematics, and how families and educators support this learning. Through modelling a differentiated learning approach, the chosen activities and investigations explored throughout the unit allow preservice teachers to extend their mathematical thinking and design rich teaching and learning experiences for children aged 0-8.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
recognise the characteristics of mathematical problem solvers, apply these, and translate these to young mathematicians’ learning
- 2
demonstrate broad and flexible understanding of the concepts that underpin the mathematics curriculum in the early years
- 3
display confidence in your capacity to engage in mathematical activity and in your ability to continue to learn mathematical subject knowledge for teaching
- 4
effectively communicate mathematics to your peers and lecturer, using a variety of media, including information and communication technologies (ICTs)
- 5
articulate how your learning experiences in the unit relate to teaching and learning mathematics in early childhood settings and primary schools.
Workload and teaching
You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours which includes:
