Overview

This unit will introduce you to the complexities involved in teaching English and literacy, and in developing theoretical perspectives on learning and teaching in the field. You will develop your own discipline knowledge of English. You will be encouraged to research changing practices in the teaching of English, critically reflect on your own beliefs and teaching practices, and develop a robust theoretical perspective on the learning and teaching of literacy for a diverse range of learners. You will focus on the range of ways children encounter and use symbol systems while exploring their diverse everyday worlds and building their literacy skills. You will also develop understanding of relevant local and national English curriculum for schools, and the interrelated strands of language, literature and literacy.

    Demonstrate an understanding of primary school curriculum relation to literacy learning.

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding. Additionally, video-recorded lectures will be embedded in workshops; school visits may be arranged; and showcase of picture story books may be created in small groups
