Multimedia and interactive learning design

EDF2402

Synopsis

Multimedia and interactive digital artefacts have become part of the everyday world of learning designers. The ability to create valuable learning using interactive learning artefacts such as videos with embedded quizzes, in-class polls, and web based interactive tasks is a core skill for learning designers. This unit will explore key theories related to multimedia creation and interactive learning as well as provide you with hands-on skills in building multimedia and interactive learning artefacts using software from the learning design industry.

The unit begins with a focus on simple graphics and visual presentation from infographics to slide decks which will draw on cognitive theories of information processing, typography and aesthetics in graphic design. The unit then explores multimedia learning theory and related research around rich media of instructional audio and video. You will investigate when audio can be used to best effect, from embedded narratives to standalone podcasts.  Many interactive learning artefacts are housed in learning management systems. In addition to the exploration of interactive design theories, the unit will provide opportunities for hands-on experience using a learning management system which embeds static and interactive digital content. In the process you will explore implications of system choice, concerns about navigation, and considerations in learning sequences.
