Overview

This unit develops and enhances your specific health-related knowledge, skills, pedagogies and capabilities. With its focus on creating safe and supportive environments in order to explore a number of contemporary priority and emergent youth health issues, popular culture and media, notions of digital health, and building pedagogical repertoires the unit provides you with a strong base for teaching health education in a variety of contexts and/or settings, and to cater for student diversity. A central feature of the unit is its focus on and exploration of three contemporary priority youth health issues of importance in society, the media, and schools, namely, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing; sex, genders, sexualities and sexual health; and, discrimination, power and violence. To sensitively address these issues the unit takes a strengths based approach that is strongly research and theory driven, and inclusive of contemporary pedagogies and practices needed for educating young people in today’s complex and ever changing society.
