Overview

This unit is the third of four that develop and enhance your health-related knowledge, skills and capabilities as a health and physical education pre-service teacher. With its focus on creating safe and supportive environments in order to explore a number of contemporary priority and emergent youth health issues, popular culture and media, notions of digital health, and building pedagogical repertoires the unit provides a strong base for teaching health education in a variety of contexts and/or settings. A central feature of the unit is its focus on and exploration of three contemporary priority youth health issues of importance in society, the media, and schools; namely, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing; sex, genders, sexualities and sexual health; and, discrimination, power and violence. To sensitively address these issues the unit takes a strengths based approach that is strongly research and theory driven, and inclusive of contemporary pedagogies and practices for educating young people in today’s complex society.
