Overview

Through a focus on field-based learning, workshops and research, this unit will enable you to develop your leadership capacity for continually improving mathematics learning and teaching environments in primary schools through deepening your understanding of student-centred inclusive mathematics teaching for students with diverse abilities who have special rights for mathematics education. This includes students who are over-represented in the group of primary students who underperform when learning mathematics in classrooms, including students who are highly capable, and those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments, or who are anxious when learning mathematics.

This unit will enable you to increase your knowledge of research and advice about how best to design inclusive environments for learning mathematics and approaches teaching mathematics for children with diverse abilities, dispositions and backgrounds. You will build your understanding and skills about how to work collaboratively to plan and teach a series of mathematics lessons for a small group of students, and to respond to what you learn from observing and listening to the children’s mathematical thinking and explanations during each lesson. The unit also builds on learning from the core mathematics education units to support ongoing development of mathematical knowledge for teaching and in-depth understanding of mathematics curriculum content and structure.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours which includes:

  • 24 contact hours comprising of lectures, workshops, tutorials and online activities/engagement and;
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study.

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through, collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding.
