Overview

This unit examines how teachers teach primary school learners to learn and understand the world through HASS (Geography, History, Economics and Business, and Civics and Citizenship education) using single-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and integrated lenses. You will explore how the Humanities and Social Sciences is taught throughout the primary years, reflecting on strategies for engaging learners in HASS learning. You will engage with theoretical, philosophical and pedagogical viewpoints, and assessment strategies that address issues derived from the relevant curriculum frameworks, including the cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities. You will also learn and develop the skills of lesson planning and implementation of curriculum in HASS through single-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and integrated studies, using inquiry teaching and learning methodology.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    understand how primary school learners develop knowledge, skills and understandings in HASS

    develop appropriate techniques and teaching strategies for engaging primary school learners in HASS learning including inquiry based approaches

    devise, interpret and critically reflect on units of work in primary HASS incorporating single-disciplinary and integrated disciplinary approaches as well as a range of resources

    communicate succinctly and clearly HASS information and ideas to others.
