Overview

This unit builds your capacity to research teaching and learning in particular educational settings. You will demonstrate your capacity to work with data ethically through an analysis task. This is focused on examining data from an education setting generated for particular purposes via a range of select methods, e.g. via self-study, action research, or participant observation, focus groups or interviews with stakeholders, analysis of documents or other artefacts, etc. You will apply and hone your developing research skills through a small-scale project designed to inform your own educational practice. Finally, you will demonstrate a clear and coherent exposition of the knowledge and insights you have gained about research processes and outcomes through a poster presentation of your findings to your peers and tutors, followed by a reflection task.

Minimum total expected workload equals 144 hours per semester comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • 24 contact hours per semester to include:
  • 7 x 3-hr workshops
  • 3 hours of peer interaction on the research project

(b.) Requirements for offshore Kaplan-based students:

  • one intensive block comprising (usually from Thursday to Sunday)
  • at least 4 hours of online study per term

(c.) Additional requirements for all students:

  • independent study to make up the required minimum hours per semester

The face-to-face classes provided are designed to assist guide and engage you with the online learning content. You will work on your own project and research communication, under the guidance and consultation of the lecturer and peers. In each class, you can expect to work independently and in a team to both develop ideas and skills relevant to your assignments, and enhance your teamwork and independent learning skills. To encourage active and deep engagement with the intended learning outcomes for this unit, face-to-face classes will draw on a mix of research activities active learning and skills development formats.
